NMV's 2020 Open Call is LIVE - Apply Today!

By Wes Panek

We’re excited to announce the 2020 New Media Ventures Open Call!

The open call is the most powerful tool we know for identifying the movements, technology, and media powering campaigns for change. Over the last decade, we've invested in startups that have gone on to shape the field ahead of the 2020 election. But we can't stop now. NMV’s mission is to fund early-stage progressive innovation beyond any one election cycle. That’s why we're excited to fund the next wave of activists and entrepreneurs wrestling with the big challenges facing our democracy. If you’re building an innovative solution, we want to hear from you!

From February 3rd to March 2nd, NMV is looking for scalable nonprofit and for-profit projects from diverse, mission-driven teams. Ideal for early-stage startups, the fund will disburse grants and investments from $50k to $250k.

But funding is just the beginning. Startups in our portfolio will also:

  • Join a vibrant community of NMV peers
  • Work with our Entrepreneur-in-Residence to navigate the challenges of startup life
  • Connect with NMV’s network of angel investors for follow-on capital, connections, and advice
  • Pitch at our annual NMV Summit, which brings together donors, investors, and entrepreneurs to build community and advance our collective work

What We’re Funding

Over the past decade, NMV has supported more than 80 fast-growing social change startups including Blavity, Sister District, MobilizeAmerica, Mijente, and the Center for Technology & Civic Life.

This year, we’re especially eager to hear from startups that are:

  1. Shifting Power. How can tech and media help restore power to people and communities?
  2. Building Movements. How can innovation accelerate movements for racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice?
  3. Changing Narratives. How can new voices change the way we see the world? What’s the next chapter for media and messaging?
  4. Sparking Civic Engagement. How can technology help recruit and empower people like never before – from voters to volunteers to candidates?

We particularly want to support underrepresented founders with first-hand experience of the problems they’re trying to solve.

And because we know change comes in many forms, we fund projects across a range of fiscal structures and governance models. You could be eligible if your venture is a:

  • Nonprofit 501c3, 501c4 or 527
  • For-profit company
  • New organization
  • New project within an existing organization
  • A collaborative project of multiple organizations

If you’re building movements, technology, and media to power the future, we want to hear from you. Apply today!
